The Center for Global Education is pleased to welcome Gregory Neely, Associate Professor of Psychology & International Coordinator, Faculty of Social Sciences and Sara Franke-Wikberg, Faculty of Social Sciences Administrator at Umea University. Our exchange program partner from Umea, Sweden will be on campus Thursday, September 19, 2013. Please join us for a “Campus Conversation” to discuss the opportunities available to faculty and students through this program. We will meet from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. in Hyland Hall room 1201 which is located near the Center for Global Education – the first door on the left as you enter Hyland Hall. (A separate information session for students will take place at 2:00 in Hyland Hall 1001.)

Studying at Umea University offers students an opportunity to take courses across the curriculum in English while experiencing Scandinavian culture and an international campus environment. Students of all majors are eligible to participate in this exchange. Umea offers courses in English in Biology, Business, Chemistry, IT/Computer Science, Economics, Education, History, Math/Statistics, Physics, Political Science, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, and Swedish. Complete course information can be found in their online course catalog, http://www.umu.se/english/education/courses1.

Umea is the largest and fasted-growing city in northern Sweden. The student population of over 30,000 makes it a vibrant university town. Umea is home to museums, film and music festivals, and professional sports teams. The city is easy to navigate on foot, bike, or with public transportation. It is connected to Stockholm, as well as the rest of Europe, by reasonably-priced train, bus, and flight networks.

UWW Curriculum and Instruction or Special Education majors have the opportunity to student teach in Sweden. These students begin their directed teaching in Wisconsin, travel to Sweden to teach in a Swedish school, and then return to Wisconsin to complete their directed teaching assignment. They participate in the course “Teaching and Learning in an International Context” at Umea University. 4-6 weeks of their directed teaching experience takes place in Sweden.
